I am a researcher in limnology with strong interests on fish fauna and lacustrine food webs. Basically, my activities are addressed to:

  1. Study freshwater fish communities and the impacts of anthropogenic and climatic pressures, such as eutrophication, chemical pollution, fishing and, recently, global warming.
  2. Study the cycling of pollutants in lacustrine food webs.
  3. Study non native fish species invasions and their impacts on ecosystem functioning and native communities.
  4. Supporting the Italian policy makers (Ministry of the Enviroment and Regions) in the implementation of the National laws related to the monitoring of freshwaters and the assessment of water quality according to the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC. In this regard I was the author of the “Protocol of fish sampling in italian lakes” (ISPRA, 2014) used as national reference protocol. Also I set up the national index (Lake Fish Index) used for the ecological status assessment of lakes according to the WFD 2000/60/2000.
  5. Advise managers of public bodies and protected areas in order to ensure a sustainable exploitation and/or conservation of freshwaters (with a focus on fish communities).
