The mission
The Institute’s basic and applied research activity is in the field of water and land ecosystems, and is involved in understanding how ecosystems react to the impact of global climate change and anthropogenic pressure. Its main objective is to generate the scientific knowledge that must precede any protective and corrective measures on the environment, in support of the authorities responsible for applying such measures.
We pursue our mission by:
-
disseminating accurate, timely and reliable information through websites, publications, scientific meetings and training courses;
-
facilitating innovative and essential research through the provision of specialist scientific facilities and the giving of grants and scholarships;
-
providing sound, independent scientific opinion to government, industry and the scientific community and acting as the advocate for freshwater and terrestrial biology.
